A very expansive copyright

So I’m cleaning up a bit around the house and I have the Cowboys/Vikings game on in the background. Each time they transition from commercials back to the game they run a copyright announcement that reads: “This telecast is copyrighted by the NFL for the private use of our audience. Any other use of this telecast or any pictures, descriptions, or accounts of the game without the NFL’s consent is prohibited.”

Isn’t this just a little bit crazy? I mean, you’re not allowed to give an account of a game without the NFL’s consent? I take it that this is basically never enforced. If I talk about a particularly great play is that really a violation of copyright? This seems a bit extreme.

(Huh. There appears to have been a very interesting back-and-forth between a law professor, YouTube, and the NFL regarding just this. A nice overview of the situation here. Good for her!)
