Spring Break

Spring break starts tomorrow. The most common question asked and answered in the days leading up to spring break is what you’re doing and where you’re going. I’ve been asked this at least several times a day for the last week or so. And I get an excited look in my eyes. And I start to grin and look happy. And I tell them that I get to stay here and work on my dissertation for a whole week without having any other distractions or obligations. Upon hearing this, some people (we’ll call them the non-academics) look either confused or look at me with pity. But academics – those in grad school or who have gone through grad school? They just smile and nod knowingly. Because often there isn’t much better, more worthy of anticipation, than having a goodly chunk of time that you get to devote completely and entirely to your own work.

Ahh. Bliss.
