you notice how I didn’t post anything about Stoicism, or any other topic in ancient epistemology, even though I said I would? Yeah, I did too. I got caught up rereading the original sources and decided to spend time with them rather than write something up.
That and I had folks over for dinner Friday which took up much of the afternoon and all of the evening (and then part of the next morning). Dinner was tasty – Mexican comfort food. I bought some corn and flour tortillas and then made stuff to go in them (beans, rice, chicken, salsa). The chicken was tasty – I made a tequila lime marinade which is basically just one huge margarita. I kid you not – it’s 1 C lime juice, 1/2 C tequila and 1/2 OJ (or, since I didn’t have OJ, I used triple sec). The hardest part of making the marinade was watching a perfectly good (albeit rather weak) margarita being ruined by chicken. Dessert was cupcakes. And not any normal, boring cupcakes…but rather I made chocolate stout cupcakes with espresso cream cheese frosting. Chocolate, espresso and beer…all wrapped together into a cupcake sized morsel?! Clearly the perfect trifecta.

Have you considered opening a b&b for philosophers on the move? I think you’d have a solid clientele…
chocolate…espresso…AND beer? have a reference for the recipe?
LOL Girl, where DID you learn to cook?!?!?! Even though Dad’s a somewhat adventurous cook, and Mom’s a pretty darn decent baker….. It’s like you combined their skills, added a dash of “kick ass” and blended well. You always did like to bake (told Tay about you making Dad’s first-ever b-day cake when you were 6, and the purple frosting that you whipped up to put on top), but I remember that you were never one much for the actual cooking when we were kids (Mac & Cheese, anybody?), that was me…. Making the omelets, the chicken divan. And Kori still barely knows how to cook (spagetti with plain marinara, chicken ring, broiled chicken breasts w/ lemon pepper).
*shaking head* So, share the titles of the cookbooks you’re getting all these from!!!!
Love ya, Kati
Ryan — A few friends have mentioned that I have a backup career if philosophy doesn’t pan out. *grin* The problem with a B&B is that I would have to, erm, be neater than I am now. Or hire someone else to clean up. I would be more up for a small coffee shop, methinks.
Katharine – It was delicious! The recipe is here. I halved the recipe, since I only wanted about 12 cupcakes and the recipe would have made about 24. Oh, and I added more cocoa than was asked for….because one can’t have too much chocolate.
Kati – I cooked…I think. Hmm…I can’t remember, actually. I like having friends over for dinner and don’t like to serve the same thing over and over and over….so I like finding new things to serve. That and cooking is relaxing…it’s a break from philosophy or other stuff. I think I might be lucky in that I don’t have to cook for other people. If I want to have a sandwich for dinner I can…I don’t have a daughter who will complain (ahem!) so cooking hasn’t yet become a chore for me. Besides…cooking is easy! You get a recipe and you follow it. Or you see the general idea and then improvise. Speaking of finding recipes and following them (or, more likely, improvising) I’m going to try to make gnocchi tonight. If it works, I’ll let you know! (Mmmm…gnocchi….)
Oh…I do websites, not cookbooks. My favorites are
Epicurious (This is absolutely my favorite and first place I’ll go for any recipe)
Allrecipes
Leite’s Culinaria
and
The Splendid Table
Oh, Epicurious (the show, when they had regular new episodes) is Fabulous. They’re also tied into Gourmet Mag., which I loved reading in German & French classes in HS (Mrs. Niehbour had several years worth of subscriptions in her room). And Allrecipes is where I’ve gotten my shark & mahi mahi recipes from, lately. I’ll have to check out the other 2, though.
